What is Cyanotype?
The name Cyanotype comes from the Greek word ‘kyanos’ meaning dark blue. It is one of the oldest photographic printing techniques, invented in 1842 by British scientist Sir John Herschel. Known for its striking tones, the method was originally used to make blueprints.
The process involves coating a surface— paper, fabric, or even wood—with a light-sensitive solution made from iron salts. Once dried, the surface is exposed to UV light, with a photographic negative or objects placed on top. The areas exposed to light turn a deep Prussian blue, while the covered parts remain white, creating a high-contrast, monochromatic image.
This process allows for the creation of unique, one-of-a-kind artworks, where each print is inherently different due to the variables of exposure and the natural conditions during processing.
Our contemporary approach utilizing high quality digital capture with contact printing produces stunning artistic imagery, allowing you to experience a form of visual time travel.
Each cyanotype piece is a testament to the unique chemistry and craftsmanship involved.
At Salty Dog we offer our prints for purchase and also undertake bespoke commissions.
