SErvices & Pricing
Commissioning a cyanotype print with Salty Dog Pix is a collaborative and creative experience, resulting in a truly unique piece of art.
Here’s how it works…
Step 1
The process begins with a conversation. Whether you’re looking for a cyanotype of your dog, boat, or a historic building, we’ll discuss your ideas, preferences, and the story you want your artwork to tell.
Step2
Next, we’ll arrange a photoshoot. This can take place at a location of your choice or we can use our pop-up studio to create a controlled environment for the photography session. We’ll then capture a variety of high-quality digital photographs, ensuring we have the perfect shot for your cyanotype print.
Step 3
A few days after our shoot you will receive a selection of low-resolution colour digital images, free to keep, as part of your commission. We will discuss which image is most suitable for the final cyanotype print and subsequently create a digital negative based on that selection. This step is crucial, as it ensures that the image is optimized for the cyanotype process, effectively accentuating all details and tonal variations. Following this, we will apply a light-sensitive solution to high-quality, acid-free paper in preparation for exposure.
Step 4
The coated paper and digital negative are exposed to UV light, either from the sun or a specialized lamp. This exposure creates the stunning Prussian blue tones that cyanotypes are known for. The print is then rinsed and dried to reveal the final image.
Step 5
Because the cyanotype process is inherently unpredictable—affected by variables like light intensity, exposure time, and the hand-coating technique—no two prints are ever identical. To ensure your satisfaction, we provide a minimum of three prints for each commissioned image. You’ll have the opportunity to select the one that best resonates with you, making the final choice uniquely yours.

What Makes It Special
Cyanotype is not just a photographic print — it’s an artwork. Each image is hand-brushed with light-sensitive chemistry and then exposed in UV light. The result is a beautiful deep-blue print with painterly edges and natural texture — no two prints are identical. The process is slow, tactile, and entirely analogue — offering something rare in a digital world.
Whether it’s your dog, your home, your boat, or a landmark close to your heart — we’ll turn it into a lasting heirloom.
